I am obsessed with cheeses, salads, dressings, dips, pickles\nand all condiments. Our Levantine cuisine is nothing but short of dishes that\nfall under this category and we even have a name for it, <em>Mezze<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\"><strong>I have\nalways been responsible for the cheese platter in the family and for making the\ndips and salads on BBQ days. Unlike most of my family members, I enjoyed BBQs\nnot because of the meat, but because of hummus, <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/test.thebitterolive.com\/the-perfect-tabbouleh\/\"><strong><em>tabbouleh<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong>, eggplant mutabbal and everything\nelse. To be honest, I could eat mezze every single day for breakfast, lunch and\ndinner and wouldn\u2019t get bored. The variety of dips and small bites that we have\nis mind-blowing.&nbsp; <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\"><strong>I guess\nmy point is, there is really no right or wrong way to do this. In this platter,\nI just used whatever I had on hand and it turned out perfect. The sky is the limit here, I\nhave already published a recipe for <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/test.thebitterolive.com\/baba-ghanoush\/\"><strong><em>baba ghanoush<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong>, which is perfect for such a\nplatter. I will also be publishing more dips soon like the infamous muhammara,\neggplant mutabbal and many more. <\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>Cheese <\/em><\/strong><strong>(6, 14, 15): I grew up eating Syrian and\nLebanese string and braided cheeses and they are my favorite. I also have\nincluded a Turkish spicy semi hard cheese. Feta also works perfectly fine in a\nmezze platter, so do <\/strong><a href=\"http:\/\/test.thebitterolive.com\/pantry-staples\/labneh\/\"><strong><em>labneh<\/em><\/strong><\/a><strong><em> balls<\/em><\/strong><strong>.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>Marinated vegetables <\/em><\/strong><strong>(4, 17): I love home marinated\nolives. Sun dried tomatoes and marinated artichokes would also be a welcomed\naddition here. <\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>Breads and crackers<\/em><\/strong><strong> (7,9): toasted bread and zaatar\ngrissini. I also was planning to add pita chips, but I burnt them in the oven\nand had no time to make an additional batch. Pita chips is perfect in a mezze\nboard because they are perfect for dipping.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>Sweet dips<\/em><\/strong><strong> (8,13): apricot jam, which is a very commonly\npaired with cheese in the Middle East. Honey is also a typical choice here.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>Nuts: <\/em><\/strong><strong>I added pecans and unsalted toasted almonds to\nthe board. They taste divine with cheese.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>Fruits and vegetables:<\/em><\/strong> <strong>here, I added grapes, but you\ncan add whatever you have. Vegetable sticks is also an excellent addition.<\/strong><\/li><li><strong><em>Meet:<\/em><\/strong> <strong>I usually don\u2019t add any meat to my boards,\nbut had this salami on hand and thought why not? Basterma would also be a nice\naddition.<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\"><strong>You probably figured by now, it is totally a\nmatter of personal choice and what you have on hand.<\/strong> <strong>Key thing is to start with your\nramekins or dips dishes and build the board around them, as simple as this.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p style=\"text-align:justify\"><strong>Now this feta dip is so simple and is a crowd\nfavorite. The saltiness of the cheese, tanginess of labneh and sweetness of\nhoney makes it addictive.
